Didn’t do night life! Too exhausted after walking miles round art galleries and the Palace! The Hop on hop off bus gives a good service – a must for first day or two.
Very busy! But it is a city.
Patience, Castle Hedingham
Tapas bars and good menu of the day deals.
Madrid can be very noisy and dusty, especially in the summer.
Ian, Perpignan, France
Great art galleries, chance to see some rare masterpieces. Pity the ‘new’ Mona Lisa had been sent to Paris! Palace interesting. Dont miss the armoury – impressive display of suits of armour – men and horses, including El Cid. Good choice of restaurants, and we found some gems. €14,50 menu del dia still available in the evening at 5J’s (Meson Cinco Jotas) 8 Plaza Mayor, south-west corner. Great food and excellent service. In the side streets some very interesting older-style shops and the meat/cheese/wine shops are fantastic. Lovely coffee in Cafe Oriente, Plaza Oriente near the Palace. Try the restored market in Plaza San Miguel for a huge variety of tapas stalls and fresh produce.
In the main shopping areas you could be in any modern city – the same high street names crop up. Away from that, the streets can be a bit seedy.
Vibrant city, good range of bar/restaurants, nice cafe culture. Lots of very elegant buildings, large parks to chill out in. First class metro system. Main line railway stations provide good jump off points to venture out of Madrid. For those into culture there is a great range of museums
Drunken stag/hen parties sometimes get out of hand. Like all big city’s take care against pick pockets.
Plenty of restaurants right on the doorstep. City was really vibrant especially at night.
