York's history goes all the way back to the Romans, who established the city of Eboracum as their northern stronghold in the UK. After the departure of the Romans, the city was ruled by Anglo-Saxon Kings and later the Vikings after they conquered the city in 866AD. The identity of the city today reflects it's tangled past.

In the heart of the city is the Shambles, a narrow cobbled street with buildings dating back to the 14th Century (although the name probably derives from the Anglo-Saxons some seven hundred years previous). The city is surrounded by a high medieval wall that surrounds two thirds of the city, there is a Victorian railway museum which reflects York's history as a centre of the railways (at one time it had the largest railway station in Europe), and there is also, of course, York Minster. Dating back to a Roman fort it has developed over thousands of years into a stunning cathedral that dominates the York skyline. No York holiday is complete without visiting the Minster, and the view from on top of the bell tower is worth the entrance fee alone.

A good area to stay is around the Minster, though slightly removed from the town centre, that part of the city has a more relaxing atmosphere.
