Lisbon, like so much of the Iberian Peninsula, has enjoyed a long and interesting history. It was conquered by the Romans in 205BC, when it had already been a thriving town for over 1,000 years. Julius Caesar had a great fondness for the city, and renamed it after himself. In the 5th century Germanic tribes conquered, before the Moors took control of the city in the 8th century. It remained under Islamic control under crusaders in the 12th century conquered the city, and it has thrived ever since.
The first thing to consider with Lisbon is how to get there. Lisbon Airport is unique in that it is one of very few major airports to be located within the city limits, and therefore transport to the centre of the city is very easy. Though perhaps a trifle unusual, the airport's location has given rise to many tourists choosing to stay in Lisbon Airport's hotels, saving the effort of transferring baggage, and yet remaining close to the centre of the city. Of course, if you don't fancy the airport, there are hundreds of different options for hotels around Lisbon hotels that cater to every budget and requirement.
So, having decided on a hotel in Lisbon, the next thing to do is to decide what you're going to do. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists take their holidays in Lisbon, so there is plenty to do. The city's rich history has left its mark in the architecture and culture, and no Lisbon holiday is complete without a visit to Commerce Square, which is a truly enormous space dominated by outstanding 18th century architecture. Other things to see include the Chiado market districts, with its mix of old and modern commerce, the Belem harbour region, from which many of the most famous Portuguese explorers started their voyages, and the city centre, the Baixa region, which is currently under consideration as a potential world heritage site. If you're looking for night life, Bairro Alto is the place to go; it is a region in the centre of the city that advertises itself as offering everything anyone could look for in a night out.
